SACRAMENTO, Calif.-The California Public Employees Retirement System is soliciting bids for a new administrative relationship for its self-funded PPO program for the first time in 10 years. Twenty percent of the giant purchaser's 1 million enrollees are in two PPOs, and CalPERS wants to preserve that choice, said Bill Branch, a CalPERS spokesman. But it's getting very expensive compared with the cost of HMOs, which cover 80% of enrollees, he said. The two PPOs have been administered by Blue Shield of California. Prescription drugs have been handled by Medco, and case management and utilization review by Healthmarc. The dollar value of that business was not available.
LAS VEGAS-Dallas-based CareLink Health Partners said it has agreed to manage a senior health center operated by 120-bed Columbia Sunrise Mountain View Hospital in Las Vegas. The center is located in Las Vegas' Sun City Summerlin, a retirement community developed and run by Phoenix-based Del Webb Corp. The community has about 12,000 residents age 50 and older. CareLink said Del Webb will serve as the facility's landlord, and Columbia Sunrise Mountain View will pick up its operating costs. The center will provide primary-care and ancillary services for patients age 65 and older. CareLink manages 17 contracts around the country.
