After a five-month antitrust investigation, the Federal Trade Commission gave its blessing last week to Marshfield (Wis.) Clinic's proposed acquisition of Wausau (Wis.) Medical Center.
Marshfield, with about 450 doctors, announced its intentions to absorb the 73-physician Wausau group in February, and filed its pre-merger notification documents with the FTC (March 10, p. 28). The FTC cleared the deal last week without comment.
The physician groups subsequently said they intend to complete their deal by Oct. 1. Financial terms haven't been disclosed.
Marshfield, which had been embroiled in a lengthy antitrust lawsuit with Blue Cross and Blue Shield United of Wisconsin, operates 30 facilities in communities throughout central, northern and western Wisconsin. The towns of Wausau and Marshfield are about 40 miles apart in central Wisconsin.
