I appreciated your cover story headlined "Going international" (June 2, p. 30) and believe it is time that we discuss the benefits of international business development and its incredible potential as a secondary revenue source.
I was disappointed, however, that the article didn't include other healthcare systems outside of Miami that are actively targeting international clientele. Florida Hospital in Orlando has served international patients from 52 countries and is a major tertiary referral hospital for much of the Caribbean and South America. Promoting its leadership through Florida Heart Institute, which ranks third in the nation based on open-heart surgery volume, and Walt Disney Memorial Cancer Institute, one of the Southeast's largest and most comprehensive cancer centers, Florida Hospital is making significant investments that have worldwide implications.
One worth mentioning is an innovative approach to attracting international patients by piggybacking on what is already a rapidly growing tourism market. Celebration Health, located outside Orlando, is a 21st-century health campus developed in conjunction with Walt Disney Imagineering. From health and stress management assessments for the international executive to medically supervised programs in weight management and plastic surgery, Celebration Health will promote its lifestyle enhancement programs through the many theme parks and attractions (i.e., Walt Disney World, Epcot Center and Disney/MGM Studios) that make Orlando a top tourist spot.
