Clinicians at HealthSystem Minnesota carry a card outlining the techniques for a successful medical interview. The cards, published by the American Academy on Physician and Patient, contain six relationship-building behaviors, called PEARLS:
Partnership: "Let's tackle this together."
Empathy: "That sounds hard." "You look upset. "You seem discouraged." "Wow."
Apology: "I'm sorry I (or others) hurt/offended/annoyed you."
Respect: "I appreciate your (courage, decision, action)." "You have worked hard on this."
Legitimation: "Anyone would be (confused, sad, irritated) by this situation."
Support: "I'll stick with you as long as necessary."
