As healthcare continues its move out of the traditional hospital setting, so do innovative strategies in healthcare risk management.
The sixth annual Excellence in Healthcare Risk Management Awards, sponsored by MODERN HEALTHCARE and Deerfield, Ill.-based MMI Cos., showcase hospitals, health systems, medical groups and health plans that work hand-in-hand with their medical staffs and executive leadership in a constantly changing industry.
For the first time, none of the winners was a traditional risk manager, although the risk manager continued to play a significant role in program development. Judges were impressed with the detailed entries and the entrants' ability to incorporate a broad base of providers into their efforts.
"The entries demonstrated excellent programs that help effectively manage a spectrum of risk," said Rick Becker, chairman and chief executive officer of MMI Cos. "The understanding that effective risk management requires the commitment of the total healthcare organization is clearly apparent in this year's entries."
Judges gave awards in three categories: hospitals/healthcare systems/integrated delivery systems; medical group practice/physician organizations; and health plans.
This year's judges were:
Donald Arnwine, president of Arnwine Associates, Dallas.
Lois Bittle, president of Bittle & Associates, Baltimore.
Timothy McCormick, president of Park Ridge Health System, Rochester, N.Y.
Robert Montgomery, M.D., medical director of MeritCare Health System, Fargo, N.D.
Joseph Podbielski, M.D., president and CEO of Fallon Clinic, Worcester, Mass.
Geoffrey Segar, attorney with Ice Miller Donadio & Ryan, Indianapolis.
