St. Joseph Hospital in Cheektowaga, N.Y., joined Radnor, Pa.-based Eastern Mercy Health System, effective Aug. 27.
The Erie County, N.Y., hospital, sponsored by Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph in Hamburg, N.Y., becomes Eastern Mercy's 15th regional health corporation.
Hospital and congregation leaders said the move is intended to strengthen the Catholic health ministry in western New York. St. Joseph will have access to Eastern Mercy's finance, insurance and purchasing programs; as well as stewardship and strategic positioning services.
Patrick J. Wiles, the hospital's president and chief executive officer, said participation in Eastern Mercy also provides a mechanism for collective growth of all Catholic hospitals in the region through the Catholic Health System of Western New York, which is being formed by Buffalo's Roman Catholic healthcare providers.
