Consolidation talks are under way between two of the three acute-care hospitals in Savannah, Ga.
The 305-bed St. Joseph's Hospital and 335-bed Candler Hospital have signed a letter of intent to form a joint operating company called St. Joseph's/Candler Health System. A final agreement is expected by December, a spokesman said.
Paul Hinchey, St. Joseph's president and chief executive officer, has been named CEO of St. Joseph's/Candler. Kenneth Wood, Candler's president and CEO, has agreed to resign.
Meanwhile, Savannah's largest hospital, 475-bed Memorial Medical Center, is discussing a management agreement with Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp., a Memorial spokesman confirmed. A sale of the hospital would have to be approved by the Chatham County Hospital Authority, Memorial's parent.
