After 19 years as HCFA's regional administrator in New York, William Toby Jr., is retiring to become a special consultant in Puerto Rico for GNYHA Ventures, the group purchasing arm of the Greater New York Hospital Association.
At deadline, HCFA's press office had not returned a call seeking comment on who would replace Toby.
Toby, 61, will market GNYHA Ventures' purchasing programs to island healthcare executives. Effective July 1, GNYHA Ventures has exclusive rights to market the Premier healthcare alliance's portfolio of medical, surgical and pharmaceutical products in the five boroughs of New York City, four surrounding counties, part of New Jersey and Puerto Rico (June 3, p. 6).
In Toby's current post, he is responsible for $30 billion of federal Medicare and Medicaid spending in New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. He has headed the New York regional office since June 1977 and served as HCFA's acting administrator in Washington from April 1992 through April 1993.
