FORT WORTH, Texas-All Saints Health System, Harris Methodist Hospitals and M.D. Anderson-Moncrief Cancer Center have formed the M.D. Anderson Cancer Network-Tarrant County to provide coordinated cancer services in the area. The collaboration, which officials are calling unprecedented, is designed to establish Tarrant County as a major regional provider of cancer care. The agreement came nearly a year after the three organizations said they would pursue development of a comprehensive cancer program. All Saints, Harris Methodist and M.D. Anderson-Moncrief have donated their ambulatory cancer assets, and the three organizations will share equally in the governance of the network. The assets include three mobile mammography vans and Harris Methodist's Doris Kupferle Breast Centers. The network is expected to be operational by August.
KANSAS CITY, Mo.-An AIDS-care center for people in advanced stages of the disease will open at the end of August in Kansas City. It will be the first nursing home in Missouri or Kansas dedicated to people with AIDS. Developed at a cost of just less than $1 million, Hope Care Center will have 16 beds in 12 rooms. Local healthcare workers formed a task force in 1993 because they had trouble placing their AIDS patients in existing nursing homes. With aid from the Missouri Housing and Development Committee, it raised funds through grants and private donations. The group, which has more than 400 volunteers, bought a former Christian Science nursing home and renovated the building, said Charlotte Hill, president of the board. "We need these kinds of facilities all over this country," Hill added.
