For the first time in 15 years, total annual enrollment in Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans nationwide has grown.
Enrollment in 63 Blues plans across the country has reached 65.5 million, an increase of 557,000-or 1.6%-over year-end 1994, the national Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association said. The group said the increase in managed-care enrollment-to more than 30 million- contributed to much of the growth.
Membership in point-of-service plans grew 49%, HMO enrollment grew 17.4%, and PPO membership grew 4.7%. Enrollment in traditional fee-for-service Blues plans declined by 8%.
