As expected, Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. of Nashville, Tenn., has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Charter Barclay Hospital, a 123-bed psychiatric facility on Chicago's North Side.
Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Columbia had been conducting a "due diligence" review of the hospital in recent months (April 15, p. 6).
Columbia already owns three psychiatric hospitals in the Chicago area: Columbia Chicago Lakeshore Hospital, Chicago; Columbia Riveredge Hospital, Forest Park, Ill.; and Columbia Woodland Hospital, Hoffman Estates, Ill.
Charter Barclay's parent corporation is investor-owned Magellan Health Services, Atlanta, which changed its name last December from Charter Medical Corp. after that company purchased a 61% interest in Greenspring Health Services.
Columbia has been discussing deals with several Chicago-area hospitals as part of a strategy to become a dominant presence in the region.
