Eugene Fleming, a former Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. executive, will join Quorum Health Group July 1 as executive vice president and chief operating officer.
Fleming succeeds Martin Rash, who quit in February to start a new company, Principal Hospital Co., Brentwood, Tenn. Brentwood-based Quorum owns 14 hospitals and manages 250 in 44 states.
Fleming had been president of Columbia's Eastern group, which generated annual revenues of $3.3 billion, before he quit in March to explore other opportunities. Fleming has a 19-year career in healthcare, most of it with Hospital Corporation of America. He worked for HCA's management company, which was later spun off as Quorum, between 1981 and 1982.
"I thought I would be happier in a smaller company where I would have more input," Fleming said last week about his departure from Columbia. "There are so many opportunities out there, and that's part of the lure" that draws Columbia executives to other companies, he said.
