The former chief financial officer of Josephine Memorial Hospital in Grants Pass, Ore., was sentenced last week to a year in jail and ordered to repay $38,500 he embezzled to pay gambling debts.
"I brought this on myself," James Dailey, 43, said in Josephine County Circuit Court. "I'm sorry."
Daily was indicted in May 1993 after an independent audit revealed losses of $880,000 from the hospital. Rather than turn himself in, Dailey went on the lam for three years before the FBI arrested him in December 1995 in Tampa, Fla., where he was working as a bookkeeper.
An insurance company has sued Dailey for the $61,000 it paid the hospital to cover what Dailey took. The hospital has since merged with another to form Three Rivers Community Hospital and Health Center.
Dailey pleaded guilty only to embezzling $38,500. Public defender Marcia Brand said Dailey took the money to pay gambling debts and it had a snowballing effect.
