KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Two hospital groups in Kansas City, Mo., have ceased discussions about a combination. St. Luke's Health System had been discussing a closer alignment with St. Joseph Health Center in Kansas City and St. Mary's Hospital of Blue Springs (Mo.), both owned by Carondelet Health System of St. Louis. The two Carondelet hospitals are Catholic and have strong presences to the south and east of Kansas City. St. Luke's Hospital is Episcopalian and operates a large tertiary facility in central Kansas City and a suburban hospital in the north. Spokesmen for the two groups declined to explain why the talks failed.
DALLAS-OccuSystems announced it will acquire seven occupational healthcare practices in Maryland and Delaware that are expected to add $6 million to its annual revenues. The Dallas-based company also announced a joint venture with El Dorado Hospital and Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz., to establish a network of occupational health centers in the Tucson area. OccuSystems will own a 51% interest in the joint venture, which is expected to have annual revenues of about $2.7 million, and it will receive a management fee. El Dorado is owned by Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. OccuSystems President and Chief Executive Officer John K. Carlyle said the venture, the first with a national healthcare company, "underscores our strategy to form alliances with strong partners in key markets." OccuSystems also acquired an occupational healthcare practice in Flagstaff, Ariz.
DENVER-Sisters of Charity Health Services Colorado and PorterCare Adventist Health System recently unveiled the name and organizational structure of their joint venture. The company will be called Centura Health, after its founders' 100 years of service in the region. Centura will manage the assets of Sisters of Charity and PorterCare, and it will consolidate operating and income statements. The two systems operate eight Colorado hospitals with assets of about $964 million (Dec. 18-25, 1995, p. 28). Under Centura, they will be divided into three market service areas: Denver, southern Colorado and rural areas. PorterCare President and Chief Executive Officer Terry White was named senior executive of the Denver market service area. Heads of the other areas weren't identified.
