MINNEAPOLIS-Commercial HMOs in Minnesota didn't manage to drop enrollees' total inpatient hospital days any further in 1994, according to a recent study, Minnesota Managed Care Review. HMOs in Minnesota chalked up an average of 234 inpatient days per 1,000 enrollees in 1994-almost equivalent to 1993. In the previous two years, the rate of inpatient days per 1,000 enrollees fell about 13%. In comparison, California delivery systems reported inpatient utilizat ion of 175 inpatient days per 1,000 enrollees. The study said the difference is that California systems often are capitated, but capitation is uncommon in Minnesota. The study is published by Allan Baumgarten, a Minneapolis-based consultant.
