ATLANTA-Promina Health System has filed its required pre-merger notification documents with the Federal Trade Commission for antitrust clearance to acquire 317-bed Southern Regional Medical Center, Riverdale, Ga. The addition of Southern Regional would give Promina nine hospitals. But more important, Southern Regional is located south of Atlanta, where Promina needed a facility. Columbia Health System of Georgia also submitted a bid for Southern Regional. It operates eight Atlanta-area hospitals and 18 other facilities statewide.
BALTIMORE-Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System will receive a share of a $55 million gift given to Johns Hopkins University by business news magnate Michael Bloomberg. The system will receive $5 million to help build a cancer treatment center and a research facility. The university's school of nursing will receive $1 million for construction projects, and $20 million will be an endowment to the university's school of public health.
MIAMI-Physicians Corporation of America has been awarded a $100 million Medicaid contract in Puerto Rico. PCA will manage care for about 200,000 people in the central region of Puerto Rico. Last year, Puerto Rico began its managed-care program for about 500,000 Medicaid recipients, or about 15% of its population. Enrollment under the contract is expected to begin by December, a spokesman for Miami-based PCA said.
