TOPEKA, Kan.-Menninger Clinic in Topeka will provide inpatient, outpatient and day treatment mental health services to Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., the two institutions announced earlier this month.
Menninger will operate and staff a 24-bed inpatient mental health unit at
Providence. Services will include diagnosis, psychiatric treatment, psychological evaluation, family therapy and psychotherapy. The move is part of Menninger's expansion of managed-care delivery in the Kansas City region.
DALLAS-Baylor Health Care System has started construction on a $9.4 million primary-care facility in Mesquite, a Dallas suburb. The 42,000-square-foot Baylor Family Health Center is set to open next spring. The center will offer primary and urgent care; it will be open seven days a week, with extended evening hours. Earlier this month, Baylor opened its first primary-care clinic in Southlake, Texas, near Baylor Medical Center at Grapevine (Texas). The hospital system expects to open another primary-care center in nearby Colleyville, Texas, in 1996.
BATON ROUGE, La.-The state's largest health insurer, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, has agreed to pay $21 million to settle a class-action suit. The lawsuit was filed two years ago by a group of policyholders who claimed the Blues did not share discounts with them that applied to healthcare providers. The policyholders claimed they paid their share of the charges based on a hospital's full charges while the Blues received a discount. The settlement will benefit an estimated 47,000 current and former policyholders. It also includes $3 million in attorneys' fees and expenses.
DALLAS-The Visiting Nurse Association of Texas and two of Dallas' largest hospital systems, Baylor Health Care System and Presbyterian Healthcare System, signed a letter of intent to develop a new management company called Home Health First. Under the agreement, each organization will continue to own its own home healthcare agency. However, the new management company will handle billing, community outreach, information systems and other administrative functions.
