The article "Effort to privatize drug reviews grows" (June 26, p. 54) sounds very much like having the fox guard the hen house.
For years the Food and Drug Administration has been underfunded by the government. As with many critical federal agencies, performance is expected, even demanded, but resources to meet these expectations are not available. If medical device manufacturers and pharmaceutical firms are keenly interested in facilitating the review process, let them provide the FDA with grant money to expand its operations. Let them make these grants unconditional to avoid future loss of funding if devices or drugs of their own making are denied.
A truly independent reviewer of medical devices and pharmaceuticals is critical to the safety and well-being of the American people.
