Physician practice manager MedPartners will forge a multispecialty network in the Philadelphia area following its acquisition of Vanguard Healthcare Group, the market's largest obstetrics/gynecology provider.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
It's the first Northeast foray for Birmingham, Ala.-based MedPartners, which operates in Ohio and eight Southern states.
Vanguard's 48 physicians and nurse midwives work at 16 hospitals and 35 offices.
Vanguard controls about a fifth of the obstetric delivery system in the Delaware Valley and has capitated agreements. MedPartners has a strategic alliance with Omnia, a Blue Bell, Pa.-based company founded by Vanguard President Kenneth A. Krieg. Omnia is creating a network of physicians who specialize in women's healthcare.
