Medicus Systems Corp. has acquired the software system and related assets of MMC Healthcare Specialists, an Oakland, Calif.-based vendor of managed-care contract management systems. Terms weren't disclosed.
Jim Alland, executive vice president of Evanston, Ill.-based Medicus, said the acquisition strategically enhances the company's decision-support product line. In addition to current capabilities such as budgeting, cost accounting, case management and contract modeling, the decision-support product will be able to perform core chores of contract-management software.
Those services include enforcement of payment terms, recovery of unbilled revenues, preparation for contract negotiations, and evaluation of the risks and opportunities associated with managed-care contracts.
MMC is one of about a dozen vendors that filled a growing need among healthcare providers to track and optimize the complicated terms and conditions that characterize managed-care contracts. A single contract can have hundreds of terms that affect payments, and a healthcare provider can have 50 to 100 such contracts (Nov. 7, 1994, p. 60; Nov. 14, 1994, p. 80).
Publicly traded Medicus provides software to manage hospital resources and patient populations.
