HCFA has completed its site selections for the second phase of its social HMO, or SHMO, project.
The agency picked six health plans nationwide: CAC-Ramsay, Coral Gables, Fla.; Contra Costa Health Plan, Martinez, Calif.; Fallon Community Health Plan, Worcester, Mass.; Health Plan of Nevada, Las Vegas; Richland Memorial Hospital, Columbia, S.C.; and Rocky Mountain HMO, Grand Junction, Colo.
The Social HMO II Demonstration program, mandated by Congress, will begin in January 1996, with an enrollment of about 85,000 Medicare beneficiaries.
It is the second generation of SHMOs. Congress launched the first in 1984. Partipants integrated acute care and long-term care in order to direct beneficiaries to the least costly services. They are SCAN Health Plan, Long Beach, Calif.; Elderplan, Brooklyn, N.Y.; Group Health, Minneapolis; and Kaiser Permanente in Portland, Ore.
