"An overall evaluation score and an evaluation score for each performance area reviewed during (a hospital's) survey are determined. These scores are based on a scale of 100, with 100 representing a perfect score....The smaller the difference in scores between hospitals, the less likely there is a difference in performance between hospitals....The greater the difference in scores, the more likely there is a significant difference in performance. Also, differences in scores may be related to variability in service areas and patient populations. Therefore, in assessing the difference in scores between hospitals, it is appropriate to consider a range of scores rather than the absolute number."
