The American Health Care Association has agreed to support a joint definition of subacute care that combines its definition with one developed by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
Executives said that while the joint definition is conceptually the same, it includes minor variations of the definition finalized by the AHCA in March.
The 193-word joint definition is the first step in a national attempt to create a universally accepted definition subacute care.
Typically, subacute care has been defined as a level of care between inpatient hospitalization and traditional nursing-home care.
Earlier this year, the Joint Commission announced that it would accredit subacute-care programs beginning in 1995.
