Chief executive officers of multihospital systems earn 40% more than the CEOs of individual hospitals, according to a survey by the Detroit-based human resources consulting firm of Sullivan Cotter and Associates.
The findings are based on a January 1994 survey of 20 multihospital systems and 183 freestanding hospitals.
The survey found that the average base salary plus annual cash incentives was $500,400 for system executives compared with $356,900 for individual hospital executives.
The findings mirror the results of MODERN HEALTHCARE's latest annual executive compensation survey, conducted for the magazine by Hewitt Associates, a Lincolnshire, Ill.-based benefits consulting firm.
The survey found that system CEOs earned an average salary, including bonus, of $400,800 last year compared with $206,800 for individual hospital CEOs (June 20, p. 41).
