ASHEVILLE, N.C.-The city's only two private hospitals are studying the community benefits that could be generated by a "partnership." Memorial Mission Medical Center and St. Joseph's Hospital have signed a letter of intent to pursue a partnership, but they said their plans don't call for a merger. "The letters of intent signed by the hospitals are very specific about maintaining two separate institutions," the hospitals said in a statement. "If a partnership should be developed, each hospital would maintain its separate identity and its own assets, mission and values." With 381 and 285 beds, respectively, Memorial Mission and St. Joseph's would control 100% of the private inpatient market here. A 355-bed Veterans Affairs Department hospital also is located in the city.
