CHICAGO-Some 94 hospitals and seven healthcare organizations in the Chicago area have selected Browning-Ferris Industries of Illinois to handle the estimated 23 million pounds of waste they produce each year. The Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council, which includes the member hospitals and healthcare organizations, selected BFI for a five-year contract. "This*.*.*.*could save $800,000 annually while generating as much as $7.8 million in annual medical waste, solid waste and recycling revenues for the company," according to Michael Fields, president of BFI Medical Waste Systems. CHICAGO-Columbia Healthcare Corp. last week completed its acquisition of 479-bed Grant Hospital on Chicago's North Side, adding a third hospital to its Chicago-area network. Executives wouldn't disclose terms of the deal, which had been in the works for the last several months. Grant lost $3.4 million on total revenues of $90 million in 1992, the hospital said. In June, Grant eliminated 266 of 1,500 jobs in an effort to save $8 million (Aug. 2, 1993, p. 12). "With Grant Hospital, we will strengthen our ability to offer patients and payers quality healthcare services in the Chicago area while controlling costs by sharing purchasing power and administrative costs," said Samuel Holtzman, president of Columbia's Chicago market. Grant will join Columbia's other two Chicago-area facilities, 652-bed Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago and 185-bed Hoffman Estates (Ill.) Medical Center.
