Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston has named Samuel O. Thier, M.D., as its new president. He will assume the top post before the July 1 scheduled retirement of J. Robert Buchanan, M.D., the 1,027-bed hospital's general director.
Dr. Thier's position was redefined to reflect its responsibility for seven affiliates in a parent corporation that also includes 273-bed McLean Hospital in Belmont, 284-bed Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston and other healthcare corporations.
Dr. Thier is president of Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., and a physician on the Massachusetts General staff.
Last month, Massachusetts General announced that it intends to merge with Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston (Dec. 20/27, 1993, p. 8).
