In 2003, some 16% of the chief executive officers at hospitals and systems belonging to the American Hospital Association were women. This year, nearly 21% are. And while the AHA has no comparable data going back to 2003, it estimates that today a total of 1,531 CEOs at America’s 6,450 hospitals—nearly 24%—are women.

Top 25 Women: A league of their own

Women! Suddenly, it seems like the healthcare industry can’t live without ’em. They are in demand to run some of the healthcare industry’s largest organizations and corporations. To wit, two of the 25 women on our list of the top women in healthcare changed jobs during the brief time between when our panel of senior editors selected them and when they were notified of their selection. Good for them; bad for magazine production.
