A: The National Quality Healthcare Award is an annual award given by the National Quality Forum, the Washington-based quality standards consensus building organization. Modern Healthcare is a co-sponsor of the award.

A: According to the NQF, the award recognizes a healthcare organization for its proactive and exemplary response to the national call for quality improvement and accountability by:
Successfully using performance measurement to drive quality improvement and manage care for patients with chronic conditions across settings and over time;
Fostering a culture of transparency and accountability to patients and the local community; and,
Raising the bar of health system performance to achieve safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient and equitable care for individual patients and populations.

Modern Healthcare typically announces the recipient in the first quarter of the year and profiles the winning healthcare organization is a special feature in the second quarter of the year. The 2009 winner was announced in the Feb. 2 issue of
Modern Healthcare and was profiled in the May 18 issue.
Q: Is there an event tied to the award?
A: The NQF and Modern Healthcare honor the recipient at an awards banquet in Washington in the second quarter of the year.
