In IT for the long haul

Two weeks ago, the CMS launched an unprecedented advertising campaign in more than 50 U.S. newspapers advising patients to comparison shop using three dozen quality measures posted on a federal Web site (May 26, p. 8). The campaign and its message underscores the increasing financial and public pressure on healthcare providers to reduce costly, harmful inefficiency and errors.

Personal attention

When MultiCare Health System in Tacoma, Wash., launched an integrated electronic medical record at three of its hospitals in June 2007, President and Chief Executive Officer Diane Cecchettini watched as nurses hovered over computer screens.On a more routine basis, Cecchettini scrutinizes all patient safety and clinical outcome statistics that cross her desk, looking for clues to needed refinements in care processes.

To Douglas Hawthorne, chief executive officer of Texas Health Resources, a healthcare organization is like a coat. And information technology is the lining.“It has to permeate the organization, and that’s been the most difficult thing to advance,” he says. “It impacts the entirety of the system.” He’s a dedicated advocate of using information technology to achieve “systemness” within an organization, and eventually to connect all the healthcare providers in a community to improve care.
