Alan Aviles pulls out his wallet and proudly flashes his smart card issued by 525-bed Elmhurst Hospital Center in Queens, one of 11 hospitals in the massive and sprawling New York City Health and Hospitals Corp. The card, sporting Aviles’ smiling mug shot, can accommodate his medical record, including primary diagnoses, laboratory results and even an electrocardiogram.“You can read it with a $20 USB reader,” he explains.
