According to a RAND Corp. study released in September 2005, the U.S would save $81 billion annually if healthcare providers broadly adopted a comprehensive medical-records system. The study found that medical-records systems would result in greater efficiency and ultimately would improve the quality and safety of care.However, despite the promise of savings, only about 20% to 25% of hospitals have made serious investments in information technology or adopted such systems.
