The UC San Diego Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center was designed to complement existing structures on the University of California at San Diego Health System's Thornton Hospital campus in La Jolla while creating its own identity.This year's judges for Modern Healthcare's Design Awards competition ruled that the architects beautifully succeeded in completing this task, giving the Sulpizio Center project an Award of Excellence.

Award of Excellence: Vivian and Seymour Milstein Family Heart Center, New York-Presbyterian Hospital/ Columbia University Medical Center, New York

With the Vivian and Seymour Milstein Family Heart Center at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, Pei Cobb Freed & Partners Architects created an iconic presence near the Hudson River in Manhattan.Architects found a way to make the project work, even though it's located in a tight space between two existing buildings with different elevations. The facility also earned an Award of Excellence from judges in Modern Healthcare's Design Awards.

Honorable Mention/Unbuilt: Aditazz design for Kaiser Permanente Small Hospital, Big Idea Competition

Kaiser Permanente's Small Hospital, Big Idea Project was an architectural competition and, among its 108 entries, this design is a Modern Healthcare Design Awards Honorable Mention. Architect Felicia Cleper-Borkovi created the design for San Bruno, Calif.-based Aditazz, and says the canopy, pictured here, represents the health care philosophy of “everything under one roof.” The design's lobby offers a “village market” that addresses a Kaiser goal that “community vibrancy should penetrate deep into the hospital.”

Honorable Mention/Unbuilt: Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

The Sheikh Khalifa Medical City combines the facilities of general, pediatric, shown above, and women's hospitals on a campus featuring a “town center” of cafes, stores, prayer rooms and education spaces. Design Awards judge Aurelio Posada says he liked the clever way the three hospitals were given their own identify and the project's “modern interpretation of traditional architecture.”

Citation/Built: Cooper University Hospital Roberts Pavilion, Camden, N.J.

The 12-story Roberts Pavilion on the Cooper University Hospital campus features a healing garden outside and two-story-high bamboo plants in its atrium. It combines 300,000 square feet of new construction and 80,000 square feet of renovated space.
