American Cancer Society names first control chief

Dr. Richard Wender has been hired by the American Cancer Society to work in the newly created position of chief cancer control officer.

Wender, the first primary-care physician to serve as ACS president, will focus on the organization's consumer and clinical guidance on cancer prevention and early detection as well as the implementation of its evidence-based cancer-control interventions, according to a news release.

Pete Stark: Repeal the Stark law


Stark
The healthcare world is populated by scores of legal experts who strive to keep up with the sprawling compendium of statutes, regulations and legal advisories known collectively as the “Stark law.” But the law's father, Fortney “Pete” Stark, is not one of them.

Stark, in fact, says he would favor repealing the law as it currently exists and getting back to the law's initial intent.

PBS documentary explores problems at Emeritus' assisted-living facilities


The for-profit assisted-living industry came under the harsh spotlight of PBS' “Frontline” investigators Tuesday night as the news program took Seattle-based Emeritus Corp. to task for a number of deaths and injuries involving residents with dementia at Emeritus facilities across the country.

Emeritus, which was founded in 1983 and has 483 facilities around the country, is the one of the country's biggest assisted-living operators.

Highmark lays off workers, eliminates positions at West Penn


Highmark's turn to try to stanch losses at Pittsburgh's West Penn Allegheny Health System has begun.

Roughly 260 workers at the health system were laid off today and another 200 vacant jobs were eliminated. The four-hospital system, the hub of Highmark's new eight-hospital Allegheny Health Network, has hemorrhaged cash and lost patients in recent years. Now the system must shrink accordingly, said Dan Laurent, an Allegheny Health Network spokesman.

Could ACA delay lead to more legal woes, changes?


How can the IRS and the Obama administration simply waive a key provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act passed by Congress?

Section 1513(d) of the law unequivocally states that the employer mandate “shall apply to months beginning after December 31, 2013.” Could the administration's decision to delay the penalty on employers of more than 50 full-time employees for not providing coverage to their workers be challenged in court?

Glenview Capital nominates 9th director for HMA board


Not one to sit quietly for long, Glenview Capital Management, the hedge fund trying to force a change of control at Health Management Associates, nominated a ninth director to serve on the chain's board.

The activist investor has already put up a slate of eight nominees in an effort to unseat HMA's current board of directors, which has had the same chairman since April 1986
