Carle to appeal to Illinois Supreme Court on tax exemptions

An Illinois healthcare system plans to appeal a court ruling involving whether hospitals should pay taxes.

Urbana-based Carle health system said Thursday it will appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court before a Feb. 9 deadline. Carle says its tax-exempt status allows it to provide charity care to low-income patients.

The Illinois 4th District Appellate Court ruled this month that part of a 2012 law allowing hospitals to avoid taxes is unconstitutional.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports Champaign County moved this week to put hospitals back on its tax rolls.

State lawmakers gave hospitals tax-exempt status in a 2012 compromise. But the legislation may conflict with the Illinois Constitution, which allows tax exemptions only for property "used exclusively" for "charitable purposes."
