A federal jury has convicted a former technology official within HHS on charges related to child pornography, the U.S. Justice Department announced Tuesday.
Timothy DeFoggi, 56, had served as HHS' acting director of cybersecurity and also had held other positions within the agency. An HHS official told Business Insider
that DeFoggi worked at the department from 2008 until the beginning of this year.
The government said DeFoggi registered as a member of a child porn website in March 2012 and was a member until December 2012, when the FBI seized the site. An indictment from March (PDF)
alleged he and others knowingly accessed the content and intended to transport and distribute the content elsewhere.
DeFoggi also messaged other website members and “expressed an interest in the violent rape and murder of children,” according to the Justice Department.
DeFoggi's sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 7. He could face from 20 years to life in prison
