Health policy consulting firm Breakaway Policy Strategies has named Chiquita Brooks-LaSure a senior policy adviser, effective immediately.

Brooks-LaSure most recently served as deputy center and policy director for the CMS' Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight. While at the CCIIO, she helped oversee policy related to the health insurance marketplaces, established by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Brooks-LaSure has worked closely on healthcare reform for the past eight years. From 2007 to 2010, she helped draft provisions of the ACA as a staff member of the House Ways and Means Committee. She then became director of coverage policy in HHS' Office of Health Reform.

“Chiquita is one of the most respected and knowledgeable health policy experts I know,” Dean Rosen, president and CEO of Breakaway, said in a news release. “She has had a front-row seat for the past decade in developing and implementing the most sweeping health reform law of our time.”

Several other top healthcare leaders within President Barack Obama's administration have left their posts this year. Most notably, Kathleen Sebelius announced she was resigning as HHS secretary in April. Jonathan Blum stepped down as CMS principal deputy administrator in May, and Michael Hash, director of HHS' Office of Health Reform, also left his post in May.
