Dr. Ora Pescovitz, former CEO of the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor, has accepted a job as a senior vice president at Eli Lilly & Co. in Indianapolis. She will start in October.

Pescovitz, 56, a pediatric endocrinologist, lived in Indianapolis for 21 years before moving to Ann Arbor in 2009 to head UM Health System. She was CEO of Riley Hospital for Children from 2003 to 2009 and a top researcher at the Indiana University School of Medicine, where she was executive associate dean of research affairs from 2000 to 2003.

Two of her three children live in Indianapolis.

“We are extremely excited about (Pescovitz) coming to our company in October,” said Janice Chavers, director of human resources and diversity communications at Eli Lilly. “She is a highly accomplished researcher, a highly experienced executive and was very close to patients.”

During her first few months, Pescovitz will work closely with Dr. Tim Garnett, Lilly's chief medical officer and also a senior vice president. She will work on key medical policy issues, from relationships with health care professionals and patient support programs to prescription drugs, Chavers said.

“She will then move into another senior medical leadership position. We are not announcing that yet,” Chavers said.

Pescovitz was unavailable for comment this morning. She told Crain's last week that she would be taking a six-month sabbatical after stepping down from UM Health System on June 1.

On how Pescovitz landed her job at Eli Lilly, Chavers said, “She has several relationships with top leaders (at Eli Lilly) ... and has deep relationships with the medical community in Indiana."

Indianapolis is the global headquarters for Eli Lilly, a $23.1 billion-a-year pharmaceutical company founded in 1876 by Col. Eli Lilly. It employs 38,000 worldwide.
