Dr. Farzad Mostashari, former national coordinator for health information technology at HHS, has been appointed to the board of Get Real Health, a Rockville, Md.-based electronic personal health record developer with a longtime relationship with Microsoft and its HealthVault PHR platform.

Caradigm, a joint venture between Microsoft and GE Healthcare, is also listed on the Get Real website as one of the company's strategic partners. The company is well-positioned to be a leader in the new “ecosystem” of data sharing and connected care, Mostashari said in a release.

“As a physician and as a healthcare proxy for my parents, I have a firsthand understanding of the power of connected care,” said Mostashari, now a visiting fellow with the Brookings Institute think tank in Washington. “As we look to the future, the ability of patients to get and share their own data and the ability of providers to engage patients will be true game-changers.”

In addition to his seat on the board, Mostashari, 45, will serve on the company's product advisory subcommittee, receiving stock options as compensation.

Mostashari's cited reasons for joining the company include its international presence in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom; its understanding of population health and care coordination; and how its InstantPHR product uses the Blue Button data-sharing function developed by the Veterans Affairs Department and championed by Mostashari when he was national coordinator.

“Excited to support #BlueButton movement in a new way,” Mostashari said in a Twitter message.

Mostashari has about 15,500 followers on Twitter, or roughly 11,100 more than @FarzadsBowtie, a parody account highlighting Mostashari's signature clothing accessory. In announcing his appointment, Get Real Health sent out a Twitter message that included a bowtie in a box with a message printed on it welcoming him to the company.

Mostashari was the national coordinator from April 2011 to October 2013. He succeeded Dr. David Blumenthal and was replaced by Dr. Karen DeSalvo.
