Douglas Hawthorne, the longtime CEO of Texas Health Resources, will retire from his role at the not-for-profit health system in Arlington by the end of the year.

A committee, led by board chair Anne Bass, will conduct a national search of both internal and external candidates in order to name a replacement by the fall. Hawthorne will work with the board of trustees as they search for a successor and will continue to serve as CEO until a new leader is in place.

“Whoever leads the Texas Health team will be blessed, as I have been, by the unflagging integrity, heart-felt compassion and unsurpassed excellence of the people at all levels of this remarkable organization,” Hawthorne said in a news release. “With great love, faith and hope for Texas Health and the communities we serve, I look forward to making this transition in leadership.”

Hawthorne, 66, became the first CEO of Texas Health Resources when it was founded in 1997, leading the consolidation of Presbyterian Healthcare Resources, Harris Methodist Health System and Arlington Memorial Hospital. He has 43 years of healthcare leadership experience, and has been named eight times to Modern Healthcare's list of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare.
