Healthcare's Hottest No. 14: Cumberland Consulting Group

What it does: Cumberland Consulting is a national technology implementation project management firm serving ambulatory, acute and post-acute healthcare providers.

How it grew to become one of healthcare's hottest: When Cumberland got its start in 2004, its four founding members—all formerly part of Ernst & Young's healthcare IT consulting practice—left behind the brand name recognition and resources that come with a big firm. Leaving an established practice might have seemed risky, but less than a decade later, it seems to have paid off.

Jim Lewis, managing partner and CEO, says that most clients don't mind working with a smaller operation. “If they can get comfortable that you have the capabilities, they like the more personal approach to getting something accomplished,” Lewis says.

And that personal focus isn't just for client work. It's a central theme in how Cumberland treats its employees, which helps it recruit, develop and retain top talent, key to growth in any organization.

This is the second year Cumberland is one of Healthcare's Hottest.
