What it does: Privately owned Capella develops and operates healthcare facilities primarily in nonurban markets.

How it grew to become one of healthcare's hottest: According to the company's leaders, Capella has achieved its strong growth by providing its independent partner hospitals the tools necessary to stay in the black but still remain community-based, providing capital investment for new technology and offering management expertise.

Capella prides itself on understanding the importance of engaging the communities it serves. “Looking at our progress over the past five years, that approach has made a huge difference, especially in the changing face of healthcare,” says Daniel Slipkovich, Capella's co-founder, chairman and CEO. Over the past five years, Capella grew its revenue about 170% to $747.7 million in 2012 from $277.3 million in 2007 for an annual compound rate of 22%.

Capella operates 15 acute-care and specialty hospital facilities in six states. The company collaborates with each partner hospital's medical staff, board and community on a regular basis to discuss everything from hospital finances to strategy development.

This is the second year Capella is one of Healthcare's Hottest.
