What it does: Allscripts provides information technology products to hospitals, physician practices and post-acute organizations.

How it grew to become one of healthcare's hottest:“We've been in an incredibly dynamic industry—healthcare information technology,” says Rick Poulton, the company's chief financial officer, explaining a portion of Allscripts' strong growth over the past several years. Since 2007, the company has posted compound annual revenue growth of about 39%. “You have an industry that represents close to 20% of GDP in this country and shockingly little technology around it for a long period of time. We're playing catch-up to bring digitization to what has largely been manual.”

Though Allscripts began as a business focused on practice management, it has expanded its footprint through a series of mergers and acquisitions, including those with applications software providers Misys Healthcare in 2008 and Eclipsys Corp. in 2010. But the company is also constantly working to add new products and services to its portfolio for existing and prospective clients, most recently focusing on developing solutions for population health and a changing regulatory environment.
