What it does: Imprivata helps to ensure fast and safe access to patient health information through its single sign-on authentication management and secure text messaging solutions.

How it grew to become one of healthcare's hottest: Founded in 2002, Imprivata saw a need to improve the efficiency and security of accessing client patient information for busy clinicians who were transitioning to the use of electronic health records.

“We recognized a huge problem in healthcare,” says Omar Hussain, Imprivata's president and CEO. “As electronic systems started to get adopted and the industry transitioned from paper to EHRs, one of the biggest challenges was security and patient privacy.”

Hussain says Imprivata targets the problem of healthcare providers spending excessive time logging in and out of workstations to access patient information.

The firm works alongside acute-care EHR vendors to apply its log-in technology to their applications and has added 120 customers this year, for a total of about 1,000 worldwide.
