Healthcare's Hottest No. 28: Ventas

How it grew to become one of healthcare's hottest: Since 1974, HMS' mission statement has been simple: “Improve the effectiveness of the healthcare system.” President and CEO Bill Lucia says, “We purposely kept that very broad because there are changes in healthcare every day. We want to make sure that care is delivered appropriately, that the right (providers) are paid. ... Anything that falls under the umbrella of efficiency.”

HMS works jointly with insurers and providers to ensure accuracy of payments, which present challenges as more people gain access to care under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The company now has 45 states under contract for their Medicaid programs.

“We think that collaborative relationship ensures payers and providers are further aligned,” Lucia says. “That's one of the hallmarks of our success.”
