Healthcare's Hottest No. 5: EndoChoice

What it does: EndoChoice provides devices, diagnostics, imaging and infection-control services for specialists treating gastrointestinal conditions.

How it grew to become one of healthcare's hottest: By staying focused on the gastroenterologist and the endoscopy suite, EndoChoice has found its niche. “We're not distracted by things like cardiology, urology, pulmonology, all the other players in the GI space,” says Doug Ladd, chief marketing officer. That vision, in which they focus on everything that occurs in the GI endoscopy procedure room, has helped the company expand its product offerings and propel its growth.

Though the company has grown quickly during the past five years—posting compound annual revenue growth of 94%—Ladd says he thinks it's just the beginning. With the aging population, endoscopy procedure volume is expected to increase.

Even as EndoChoice has grown organically, the company has also started bolstering its business with acquisitions. In January 2013, EndoChoice merged with Peer Medical, an Israeli company that develops endoscopy technology. Several days later, EndoChoice announced its acquisition of German-based endoscope manufacturer RMS Endoskopie-Technik.
