What it does: Homecare Homebase provides customizable Web-based clinical, operational and financial software to the home-care and hospice industries.

How it grew to become one of healthcare's hottest: As is the case with many of the companies on the Healthcare's Hottest list, a conversation with a Homecare Homebase executive centers around the company's customers. Operations that focus on this critical piece are a big part of why Homecare Homebase has grown so successfully since its founding in 1999.

Tom Maxwell, chief strategy officer, says the company uses feedback from its customers and then enhances its software to meet their needs for a greater return on investment.

One such customer is Encompass Home Health—No. 38 on this year's Hottest ranking—which Homecare Homebase CEO April Anthony also founded. (Anthony is also the Encompass CEO.) Homecare Homebase often deploys software first to Encompass, testing programs in a live environment so developers can identify and fix problems before rolling them out to the entire customer base.
