The Rhode Island attorney general's office and department of health have suspended their review of an application from a California hospital chain to purchase Landmark Medical Center, saying it is incomplete.

State officials sent a letter about the suspension Friday to the court-appointed special master overseeing the troubled Woonsocket hospital and attorneys for Prime Healthcare Services. The letter cited missing documents, unclear answers to some questions and other problems.

Prime already once submitted an amended initial application — with 1,400 additional pages — after the state said it was incomplete. The company stepped in as a buyer for Landmark after Boston-based Steward Health Care abandoned a deal with the hospital.

A Superior Court judge last year approved the purchase but the deal requires state approval.

The new deadline for resubmitting the application is April 19.
