Providence Health and Services promotes Underriner to CEO of Oregon region, and other moves

Dave Underriner, COO of Providence Health and Services, was promoted to CEO of its Oregon region. Effective April 15, Underriner, 54, will replace CEO Greg Van Pelt, who announced his retirement in February. Underriner's father, who led Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, Portland, Ore., hired Van Pelt, who in turn hired the younger Underriner as an administrative intern in 1984, according to a news release. … Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix named Dr. Steve Narang CEO. Narang, 41, is a pediatrician and has served as chief medical officer of Cardon Children's Medical Center, Mesa, Ariz., since 2011. He will replace Banner's current CEO, Larry Volkmar, who plans to step down April 25. Though Narang's appointment does not officially become effective until April 26, Kathy Bollinger, president of Banner Health Arizona West Region, said Narang and Volkmar will be working together over the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition.

W. Peter Daniels, CEO of Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare
... W. Peter Daniels, who announced his resignation as president and CEO of Elmhurst (Ill.) Memorial Healthcare in January, announced plans for Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare to merge with Edward Hospital in Naperville, Ill. Daniels is set to step down March 31, and Executive VP and CFO James Doyle will serve as acting president and CEO effective April 1. Daniels was president and CEO of Ocean Medical Center in Brick, N.J., before joining Elmhurst Memorial in September 2010. Edward Hospital President and CEO Pamela Davis is in line to lead the merged system after the transaction is complete, which the parties expect to happen by midyear. An Elmhurst Memorial spokeswoman said Daniels informed the board last fall that he wished to pursue other opportunities and agreed to stay through the merger talks. … Grand View Hospital in Sellersville, Pa., promoted J. Mark Horne to the newly created position of senior VP and COO. Horne joined Grand View in 1998 and since 2004 had been senior VP, clinical support services.

Matt Gerlach, COO, Glendale Memorial Hospital
... Salinas (Calif.) Valley Memorial Healthcare System named b>Pete Delgado as the next president and CEO of the public hospital. Delgado has been CEO of LAC-USC Healthcare Network, Los Angeles, since 2003. He is expected to join Salinas Valley Memorial in April. Salinas Valley's board previously announced they intended to hire Matt Gerlach as CEO but were unable to agree on contract terms. Gerlach retained his position as VP and COO at Glendale (Calif.) Memorial Hospital and Health Center. Last November, Delgado was named as a finalist for the top leadership position at Parkland Health & Hospital System, Dallas. Parkland recently announced it would expand its search. … Tennova Healthcare, Knoxville, Tenn., named Colin McRae CEO of Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Jefferson City, Tenn. McRae, 38, has served as interim CEO since earlier this year. He was previously COO of another Tennova facility, Physicians Regional Medical Center, Knoxville, since January 2012. Before joining Tennova, McRae served as COO for HCA hospitals in Largo, Fla., and Kingwood, Texas. Tennova Healthcare is part of publicly traded Health Management Associates, Naples, Fla. … St. Petersburg, Fla.-based Bayfront Health System, a regional health network launching April 1, named Kathryn Gillette market president and CEO. Gillette, whose age was not immediately available, joins Bayfront from Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee, Fla., where she has served as CEO since 2010. Bayfront Health System, which will include Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, will operate as a joint venture with for-profit Health Management Associates, Naples, Fla. … Dawn Anuszkiewicz is the new CEO of Ochsner Baptist Medical Center in New Orleans, effective March 4. Anuszkiewicz, 43, comes to Ochsner Health System from St. Louis University Hospital, where she was COO. At Ochsner Baptist, she succeeds Brad Goodson, who was named last year to a newly created system VP position focused on value and cost reduction initiatives. In 2008, Anuszkiewicz was named one of Modern Healthcare's Up & Comers. … Michael Weber has resigned as president and CEO of Health Quest, a position he has held at the LaGrangeville, N.Y.-based system since 2007. Weber, 58, previously was joint president and CEO for the system's Northern Dutchess Hospital, Rhinebeck, N.Y., and Putnam Hospital Center, Carmel, N.Y. The system named two executives to provide interim leadership: Donna McGregor, the system's executive VP and COO, and Denise George, the system's executive VP for clinical service and president and CEO of Northern Dutchess. Health Quest said in a statement that Weber informed the board he was leaving to pursue other opportunities. … Dr. Erik Steele will join Summa Health System as chief medical officer on June 24. Steele, 56, comes to the Akron, Ohio-based system from Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, Brewer. An osteopathic physician, Steele has worked for Eastern Maine since 1995 and was promoted to CMO in 2005. At Summa he replaces Dr. Michael Hillman.

Dr. David Hecht, VP, Loyola University
… Loyola University Health System, Maywood, Ill., named Dr. David Hecht senior VP for clinical affairs and chief medical officer, effective March 1. Hecht, 57, has been serving as interim senior VP for clinical affairs since January 2012. He joined Loyola—part of Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health since 2011—in 1988 and is chair of the department of medicine at Loyola University Chicago's Stritch School of Medicine. ... Randolph Hospital, Asheboro, N.C., announced three additions to its senior leadership team. Murray “Skip” Marsh Jr. was hired as CFO. Marsh, 49, joined Randolph in September from Warren (Pa.) General Hospital, where he held the same position. The hospital named Angela Orth as VP of clinical operations, effective in January. Orth, 46, previously was VP of regional development and quality for Advanced Home Care, High Point, N.C. Marsh and Orth's predecessors, CFO Lynwood White and VP Sandra Allen, have retired. Dr. Charles West, who likewise joined the hospital in January, is Randolph's first chief medical officer. West, 55, is an ear, nose and throat physician.


IPC the Hospitalist Co., North Hollywood, Calif., promoted Dr. Kerry Weiner to chief medical officer. Weiner takes over the CMO responsibilities from Dr. Adam Singer, IPC's chairman and CEO, who will continue to serve at the helm of the company, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Weiner had served as chief clinical officer since joining IPC in March 2011. Before that, he co-founded Lakeside Medical Group, a multispecialty practice, and was CMO of Lakeside Medical Organization, an independent practice association of about 700 physicians. His age was not available at deadline.


Gregory Allen, chief client officer, Conifer Health Solutions
Conifer Health Solutions, a division of Tenet Healthcare Corp. that provides healthcare business process management services, selected Allen Hobbs for its new role of chief client officer. Hobbs, 55, joined the Frisco, Texas-based unit on Feb. 4 after most recently serving as president of sales, client management and field operations support for MedAssets. As Conifer Health's chief client officer, Hobbs is responsible for directing the company's strategic growth and driving plans and initiatives within the sales, client management and marketing functions. … Houston-based HealthHelp hired Dr. Anthony DeFrance as chief medical officer. He succeeds HealthHelp's Dr. Mark Hiatt, who recently left to become executive medical director for Regence Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Utah. DeFrance joined HealthHelp in 2009 as director of cardiology and most recently was director of clinical operational efficiency for the company, which provides healthcare utilization- management services. DeFrance's age was not provided.
