This is the 23rd annual Modern Healthcare/Modern Physician Survey of Executive Opinions on Key Information Technology Issues.

The invitation-only survey was conducted from Nov. 12, 2012, through Jan. 18. A total of 110 executives from provider organizations participated. Invitations were sent to senior healthcare executives seeking their insights on how the information systems function at their organizations and their IT plans and priorities in the months and years ahead.

Respondents included chief information officers (27.5% of the total), CEOs (26.6%), chief operating officers (6.4%), chief financial officers (5.5%), chief medical information officers (5.5%), chief medical officers (4.6%) and chief technology officer (1%). The remaining 22.9% held various director titles.

Leaders of multihospital systems or integrated health networks make up the largest class of organizations in the survey at 40.4% of participants, followed by general acute-care hospitals (23.9%); medical groups or clinics (18.3%); academic medical centers (4.6%); and children's hospitals (3.7%). The remaining 9.1% of respondents represents other categories.
